Building Economics
Introduction
This module provides an overview of Quantity Surveyor's role during the pre-tender stage of a development. We will be introduced to practical situations of the various methods of controlling the cost buildings at the design stage. Besides that, we also be introduces to the life cycle costing of the buildings, investment and development appraisals, cost modeling and cost planning.
Our lecturer for this subject is Sr. Shirley and Ms Nurul. They are very interesting lecturer but strict at the same time. Basically this module has covered 7 chapters:
- Module Learning Outcome
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of Quantity Surveyors in the overall development process and to match the relationship between cost and design to the outcome value.
- Explain various methods of pre-tender estimating.
- Outline the importance of cost studies to enhance the role of a Quantity Surveyor in a development process of a project.
- Produce an estimate at pre-tender stage, cost plan based on historical data and S-curve in producing financial planning to a project.

Reflection
Through this module, I'm able to raise my awareness of the nature, content, and significance of cost control, cost planning and understand the roles of project teams towards fulfilling client needs. This module also provide us knowledge on how elemental cost analysis can provide a guide to estimate the price of a new found project and the effect of design variables in obtaining an economical design.Furthermore, I also learnt about the role and responsibilities of Quantity Surveyors in the overall development process and to match the relationship between cost and design to a value outcomes. In conclusion, I have better insight on cost control in building design and construction. In addition, group assignment actually help us to develop a deeper appreciation of the concepts learnt in the module by applying them in the problems given in the assignment. The assignment also enhance us in doing assignment as a team, as we need to gather information together and share the knowledge to each of everyone, so we can clearly understand in preparation of the cost plan for a project. Lastly, it is important that we refer to previous similar projects and obtain the ratios to provide for the newly proposed building.
