Structures
Introduction
Structures is another new module taught in semester 4, where it focuses on teaching students the laws of physics implemented in construction components, the calculation of different types of force and moment on components such as trusses, beams and columns. While a lot of people are frustrated on why a subject that is supposed to be for structural engineers are taught to Quantity Surveyors, I completely understand the reasoning behind it, which is quite similar to Building Services. While we learn Mechanical & Electrical Engineer works in Building Services, we study Structural Engineer works in Structures, the reasoning is similar, to understand the needs of engineer's designs and changes in designs. Learning this module can help us identify whether there is an excess in structural support such as reinforcement bars, which could then help us save cost by reducing it to a necessary amount. As Quantity Surveyors who are assigned to control cost, this module could greatly help in structural works.
The topics of this module consists of 5 chapters: Engineering principles, Forces & Equilibrium, Forces in beams, truss and lastly columns. The module's assessment consists of a mid-term test, an individual assignment & a final exam.
The module is taught by Mr. Chai Voon Chiet, who I believe is the most fitting lecturer for this module as he is experienced, helpful and knowledgable in the areas of physics & engineering. His teaching methods considers the understanding of students and his teaching material, a series of pdf files, consists of many examples that has helped and guided me throughout this module.

Individual Assignment
The individual assignment is basically an exercise on the topic regarding forces acting on truss. We are required to draw the 'force polygon' of a given set of truss by using the graphical method
Reflection
All in all, this is a very interesting module for me, and I would like to thank our lecturer Mr Chai for providing the most comprehensive guidance and helping us tackle the problems we faced while solving the given questions. I have improved my understanding skills during the tutorial as Mr Chai explain the calculation in details if I do not understand in the lecture class. I like his tutorial class because I can really practice the calculations in class so that I do not have to go home and do all the exercise and I have no one to ask if I do not understand.
